How to keep a group chat active after launch week

How to keep a group chat active after launch week: measure messages per member, move news to a channel, run a holders-only AMA and review the call board.

To keep a group chat active after launch week, give members a reason to come back on a schedule and make each visit worth a message. This guide on how to keep a group chat active is for owners and admins of a crypto community whose room was loud in week one and quiet by week three. Cherry (cherry.fun) is a wallet-to-wallet messenger and community app for crypto: you sign in with a wallet, DM any wallet address, and join or create token-gated, NFT-gated and paid group chats. The steps below use the tools a Cherry room has, and the first one replaces headcount with a number you can track.

Before you start

You need the owner or admin role in a public group on Cherry. A few settings below live in the Cherry web app at chat.cherry.fun. A broadcast channel beside the group helps from step 2 on. Setting up both, and the first week, are covered in the build guide listed under Related guides.

Step 1: Measure messages per member

Every public group on Cherry has a storefront page on chat.cherry.fun that shows the member count and the message count. Divide the second by the first. New joins with no messages pull the ratio down, so it climbs only when people talk.

RoomGateMembersMessagesPer member
Seeker ClubHold a .skr domain8,71759,626about 7
SOLANA 中文Hold a .skr domain or pay 1 USDC2,8738,986about 3
SNS ClubHold a .sol domain1,4783,924about 2.7

All figures are from October 2026. They are observations of three rooms and say nothing about why each room talks as much as it does.

Headcount misleads for a second reason. Since 21 September 2026, new Cherry accounts start with a set of recommended rooms joined by default, which they can untick, so a member count that climbs fast can mean sign-ups arriving, with no new conversation behind them.

Broadcast channels are the exception. Only owners and admins post in a channel, so a low message count there is the format working. The guide to finding crypto communities reads the same two numbers from a visitor’s side.

You know it worked when you have this week’s ratio written down with the date.

Step 2: Move announcements to a channel

News belongs in a channel beside the group, so the group stays conversation. Cherry Announcements, the channel every signed-in wallet belongs to, had 78,177 members and 12 posts in October 2026. An owner or admin who writes @all in a channel sends a push; the channels page lists every case that sends one. Save @all for news a holder would act on.

You know it worked when the last ten messages in your group are members talking to each other.

Step 3: Pin the rules and this week’s thread

Owners, admins and moderators can pin messages. Pin the rules, the time of the next event and the one thread you want people to answer this week. Unpin last week’s. Keep them current, so they describe the room as it is today.

For a public room with no gating rule and no mini app, adding ?preview=true to its link lets logged-out readers see the real chat before they connect a wallet. Use it in the posts that bring people back.

You know it worked when a new member’s first message answers the pinned thread.

Step 4: Run a holders-only AMA every month

An AMA on a fixed date gives the room a reason to return. The term is defined in what an AMA is in crypto ; here is how to run one as a habit:

  1. Pick a day and keep it, for example the first Thursday of each month.
  2. Take questions in the room gated by your token, so every asker holds it.
  3. Send the notice through your channel a few days ahead, with @all.
  4. Pin the time and the rules in the gated room.
  5. Answer from the owner and admin accounts. In the Cherry web app their messages carry an “OWNER”, “ADM” or “MOD” badge next to the name, and members carry none.
  6. Post a written recap in a public room for people who do not hold the token.

You know it worked when members start posting questions before you announce the next date.

Step 5: Review the call board with the room

In a trading room, the call bot’s board gives you a standing topic. It ranks token calls by peak multiplier since the call, credits the earliest caller, and posts its board under the header “Best recent calls:”. You switch it on: add the bot to the group, open the group’s settings, then Bots, and tick “Read all” on its row, which then reads “Receives all messages”. Cherry decides when the board posts.

The ritual is yours. Once a week, quote the latest board, ask the top caller what they saw, and ask the room what it missed. The call bot page has the ranking rules.

You know it worked when callers start posting their reasoning along with the ticker.

Step 6: Reward the members who talk

An airdrop campaign can pay SOL or an SPL token to your holders, either to the first N claimants or during a time window, with one claim per wallet. Pair the holder check with a messages-sent check, which asks for a minimum number of messages, optionally in your room and since a date. The campaign then pays people for taking part in the chat. The mechanics are on the airdrops page .

Two lighter tactics fit here. If greetings bury the conversation, the GM filter counts them as daily streaks and keeps them out of the scroll. And ask for reviews: members rate a group from 1 to 5 stars with text, the rating shows on the storefront, and free groups get them as well as paid ones. Seeker Club had 4.9 stars from 44 reviews in October 2026.

How to tell you kept the group chat active

You know it worked when messages per member rises over the following weeks, measured the same way as in step 1. Check it on the same weekday each week. One busy day can spike the count, so judge the trend over a month.

Troubleshooting

The room went quiet after a dump. Members who sold below a token rule are paywalled. They stay members, the room keeps its place in their chat list, and its content is paused behind a screen that says “You no longer meet this group’s requirements”. If they buy back and press “Re-check”, access returns with no re-join. Post a plain update and keep the next AMA date: the people coming back need a reason to type.

Raids and bots. Hand out moderator roles before you need them and run the raid playbook in the moderation guide .

Too many pings. Move news to the channel, keep @all for posts a holder would act on, and keep the group for talk.

Members joined but never posted. Some of them may have joined by default at sign-up. Mention a few by name in the pinned thread and ask one question they can answer.

FAQ

How do I keep a group chat active? Give members a reason to come back on a schedule and make each visit worth a message. Keep news in a separate channel, pin the thread that is live this week, run a recurring event such as a holders-only AMA, and check messages per member on the group’s page every week to see whether it is working.

Why is my holders chat quiet? Usually because the member count includes people who never planned to talk: holders who only wanted the gate checked, and, on Cherry since 21 September 2026, new accounts that joined recommended rooms by default at sign-up. Give the room a recurring reason to post, move announcements out of it, and measure messages per member, which is the number that moves when the room comes back.

How often should a project post announcements? Only when there is news a holder would act on, and in a channel beside the group, so the group stays a conversation. Cherry Announcements, the channel every signed-in Cherry wallet belongs to, had 12 posts for 78,177 members in October 2026. Reserve @all for the posts that deserve a push.

Do gated chats stay more active? The counts do not show that a gate causes activity. A storefront only shows each room’s result: in October 2026 Seeker Club, gated by a .skr name, had about seven messages per member, SOLANA 中文 about three and SNS Club under three. A gate means every member met the same rule to get in, and the steps in this guide apply to gated and open rooms alike.

How do I run an AMA in a group chat? Pick a fixed time, announce it in your channel, and pin the time and the rules in the room where questions will be asked. Take questions in a room gated by your token, answer from the owner and admin accounts, and post a written recap in a public room for people who do not hold the token. Repeat on the same day each month.
