What is a token gated chat?
A token gated chat admits only wallets that hold what the room asks for. How the check runs, by verify bot or inside the chat app, and how Cherry does it.
What is a token gated chat? It is a group chat whose membership is decided by a wallet: you get in, and stay in, only while the wallet you signed in with holds what the room asks for. Cherry (cherry.fun) is a wallet-to-wallet messenger and community app for crypto where rooms of that kind are checked by the app itself, with no separate verification site in the middle.
The requirement is usually a minimum balance of one token, which is where the name comes from. The same mechanism covers an NFT, a domain name, or a receipt for a paid membership.
How the check is made
There are two shapes, and the difference decides how the room feels.
The first shape bolts a wallet check onto a chat app that has no wallet model, so Discord and Telegram groups hire a third-party bot. Collab.Land’s help pages describe the member’s side of it: press “Let’s Go”, choose a wallet, and sign a message the first time, which confirms you own the wallet. The bot then grants a role. The chat app never learns what the wallet holds, so the role carries the memory until someone re-runs the check.
The second shape puts the check inside the chat app, which works because signing in is a wallet signature. There is no account to link and no role standing in for the holding. The room reads the chain when someone asks to join, and keeps reading it while they are a member.
What a token gated chat checks on Cherry
Cherry runs the second shape. A room carries up to five requirements and one switch for how they combine: all, where every requirement must pass, or any, where one is enough. Seven kinds of requirement exist as of September 2026.
- A minimum balance of a specific token, set as the mint or contract address plus an amount.
- An NFT from a named collection.
- A Metaplex Core NFT from a collection or a shared update authority.
- A name under a given TLD:
.sol,.skron the Seeker phone, or.bonk. - A wallet balance or trading-volume floor, for whale clubs.
- The wallet app the member signed in with, which is how a wallet team runs a room for its own users.
- A paid entry receipt: one-time in SOL or USDC, or a recurring USDC membership.
Token balance, NFT, Core collection, domain and paid entry are self-serve in the group editor. The wallet floors and the wallet-app check are configured with Cherry for partner rooms. Combining them is where the logic earns its keep: two balance requirements under any admits holders of either token, while a balance requirement and an NFT requirement under all admits only wallets carrying both. The full mechanism is on the token-gated chat page.
Selling ends the membership, with a lag. A wallet that drops below the minimum is paywalled: it keeps its seat while the messages are withheld, until it holds enough again.
Example on Cherry
SNS Club runs on a single requirement: own a .sol name. It held 1,454 members and 3,872 messages in September 2026, and the owner sells it on the rule itself: your domain is your pass into the club.
A token team builds the same room from a balance requirement set high enough to filter empty wallets, and often adds its NFT collection as a second requirement under any, so both audiences land in one chat. To run one, create the group at chat.cherry.fun and follow create a token-gated group chat .

FAQ
Does a token gated chat need a verify bot? Only where the chat app has no idea what a wallet is. Discord and Telegram rooms hire a bot for it, so members sign a message on the bot’s site and receive a role. On Cherry the sign-in is the wallet signature, so the room reads the chain itself and nobody sends you a verify link.
What happens to a token gated chat member who sells? Cherry re-checks holdings in the background, so a wallet that drops below the minimum is paywalled: it stays in the room and the messages are withheld until it holds enough again. The catch-up is not instant, and a seller can keep reading for a few days.
