What is RWA in crypto? Real-world assets explained

RWA in crypto means a token backed by something off-chain: dollars, Treasury bills, stocks, gold. Who issues it, who holds the backing and who may buy it.

What is RWA in crypto? RWA stands for real-world asset: a token that stands for something held off-chain, such as dollars, a Treasury bill, a share of stock or gold, with an issuer who answers for the link. RWAs in crypto are that category of tokens. Cherry (cherry.fun) is a wallet-to-wallet messenger and community app for crypto, and its Trading Terminal mini app lists tokenized stocks on a board labelled Stocks & RWAs.

How RWA tokenization works

A holder depends on six links, in this order.

  1. Issuer. A company acquires the underlying and mints tokens against it. xStocks are issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited, a Jersey company.
  2. Custodian. Each xStock “is backed 1:1 by the underlying asset held in regulated custody”, per xstocks.com.
  3. Legal wrapper. What you own in law: a tracker certificate, a debt security (Ondo lists USDY as “Debt Issued by Bankruptcy-Remote Entity”) or a fund share.
  4. The token. On Solana an SPL or Token-2022 token. A wallet shows a mint, a balance and a price, and nothing about the issuer or the redemption terms.
  5. Eligibility. The issuer’s rule binds whoever mints or redeems with it. Some tokens then trade freely on DEXs (Ondo calls USDY “freely transferrable”); others move only between approved wallets. Buying on a DEX does not make a wallet eligible to redeem.
  6. Redemption. The way back: xStocks “can be redeemed by the equivalent cash value or its underlying”.

When a link fails, the token keeps trading: lost backing leaves it backed by nothing, and paused redemptions leave a DEX price that can drift as the only exit.

Pre-IPO tokens break at the wrapper: in May 2026 OpenAI warned of the “invalidation of the underlying equity” and Anthropic called transfers its board has not approved void (The Block, 13 May 2026).

An RWA coin such as ONDO is a protocol’s own token: the Ondo DAO’s governance token, with no claim on the treasuries behind USDY. A prediction contract on a real-world outcome is an outcome market with no asset behind it; see prediction market .

Solana announced on 23 August 2026 that RWAs on its network had passed $4 billion in total value. rwa.xyz data counted 300,130 RWA holders on Solana on 15 July 2026, ahead of Ethereum, Plume and BNB Chain.

Example on Cherry

The Trading Terminal mini app runs inside Cherry chats. Its Stocks & RWAs board lists xStocks; check the Verified mark and the RWA tag, because tokens that copy xStock names also turn up in its full list.

A stock token bought there is a swap you sign in your own wallet, and it then sits under Holdings in the Terminal’s Portfolio next to USDC and memecoins. With an external wallet, Cherry never holds the funds. Stock tokens do not gate Cherry rooms; Robinhood Chain community chat explains why.

As of October 2026, xstocks.com says: “xStocks are not available to residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or sanctioned jurisdictions.” Many RWA issuers set a rule like it: check yours. Nothing here is financial advice. Tokens can lose value.
