What is a burner wallet? Why crypto apps limit them
What is a burner wallet: a fresh, disposable wallet for one risky job. Why traders keep one, where it stops protecting you, and what it can do on Cherry.
What is a burner wallet? It is a fresh, disposable wallet you use for one risky job, such as connecting to a dApp you do not know, minting from a new collection or claiming an airdrop, so your main wallet never touches the contract. If the job goes wrong, you lose what the burner held and nothing more. Cherry (cherry.fun) is a wallet-to-wallet messenger and community app for crypto that you sign in to with a wallet, and a burner with little or no on-chain history can read and DM there but cannot post in public groups.
How a burner wallet works
A burner is an ordinary address with its own key, kept apart from the wallet that holds your bags. On Solana the quickest one is a second account in the wallet app you already use: Phantom’s help center describes creating “another account from your existing Secret Recovery Phrase”. You send in only what the job needs, the mint price plus network fees, and your main holdings stay out of the contract’s reach.
Why is a burner wallet used? The usual jobs:
- A site or a wallet connection request you cannot vet.
- A mint or a launch on a contract nobody has audited.
- An airdrop claim, a common lure for wallet drainers (how to spot a fake airdrop ).
- Keeping a main wallet that is publicly tied to you away from a site you do not trust.
Where a burner wallet stops protecting you
A burner limits the damage of a bad signature, and little else.
- A malicious approval still drains whatever the burner holds. The loss is capped at its balance, so keep that balance small.
- Funding it from your main wallet links the two on-chain. The burner’s first incoming transfer shows the sender on any explorer.
- It does not make you anonymous. Every Solana address and its holdings are public, and OneKey’s guide warns that repeated use “can create associations that diminish privacy”.
- An account derived from your main recovery phrase is separate only at the address level. If the phrase leaks, every account derived from it leaks with it.
Example on Cherry
Signing in with a burner costs nothing: Cherry’s Sign In With Solana login is a message signature, so nothing goes on-chain and no gas is paid. Once in, a fresh wallet meets Cherry’s wallet-age rules . The table describes a burner signed in on its own.
| Action by a too-new wallet | What happens |
|---|---|
| Post in a public group or channel | refused; in a group the composer is replaced by the notice “Sending messages is limited for new wallets” |
| Review a paid group | refused |
| Create a public group | allowed since 31 July 2026 |
| Cold DM to a stranger | allowed, but it lands in the recipient’s hidden requests with no notification |
| Paid DM | not gated; it arrives with a notification once the fee confirms on-chain |
| Read public groups and channels | never limited by wallet age |
The paid DM is the escape hatch, at 0.01 SOL by default as of 10 September 2026 (message requests and paid DM has the full flow). Cherry does not publish how old a wallet has to be, because the number would tell a wallet farm how long to age its burners. The remedy is to use the wallet on-chain.
Holdings rules apply on top. A burner signed in alone holds no tokens, NFTs or names, so it fails every token, NFT and domain gate.
A spam account looks like a burner: no history, nothing at stake. That is why the limits key on history.

FAQ
Can I use a burner wallet on Cherry? Yes. A burner signs in with a free message signature and can read open public groups and send DMs. While it has little or no on-chain history it cannot post in public groups or channels or review a paid group, and its free cold DMs land in the recipient’s hidden requests with no notification. A paid DM, 0.01 SOL by default as of 10 September 2026, is not gated and notifies. These limits describe a burner signed in on its own.
