# WhatsApp crypto group alternatives: 6 places to move

A WhatsApp crypto group is the cheapest community to start and the hardest one to prove anything inside. Anyone holding the invite link is in, the admin is a display name over a phone number, and the only evidence that a member holds what they say they hold is a screenshot. Five failures, each one a property of the format and not of your moderators.

1. **A phone number is the identity.** WhatsApp opened username reservations in the week of 29 June 2026 and says that once usernames are live, someone you message for the first time will no longer see your number if you enabled yours. The rollout is gradual, and the account behind it is still registered to a number.
2. **Admin impersonation is one screenshot of work.** Copy the photo, copy the display name, message members privately from a number nobody checks. The chat shows no badge a member can verify by themselves.
3. **Invite links keep working after they leave you.** A link a member forwards, posts in a link directory, or sells behaves exactly like the one you sent. Resetting it locks out the people who have not joined yet and does nothing about the ones already inside.
4. **Holdings are proved with pictures.** A wallet screenshot proves that someone owns image-editing software, and nothing in the chat tells a 500,000-token holder from a member who sold last week.
5. **Nothing re-checks anything.** Entry is a one-time human decision, so the room fills with people who qualified once and people who never did.

The regulators describe the same shape from the victim's side. The CFTC's advisory on messaging apps says scammers "add random or targeted phone numbers to WhatsApp groups or Telegram chats" and stack the room with "testimonials from other group members. It's all fake". An FTC alert published on 16 April 2026 put losses to investment scams at more than $7.9 billion in 2025, with a median loss over $10,000, and names WhatsApp among the places the approach begins.

## What WhatsApp does well

Reach and delivery, for free, to people who already have it installed. Its home page states that "with end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp, your personal messages and calls are secured with a lock" and that "only you and the person you're talking to can read or listen to them, and no one else, not even WhatsApp". Communities connect related groups "under one umbrella so admins can easily organize group chats, reach everyone at once through the announcement group", and Channels give an owner a broadcast list. For a group that sells nothing and gates nothing, that is a complete answer.

## How we picked

Five questions decide this list, and they are the ones an owner asks the first time a member gets scammed in their room.

1. Can the app itself check what a member holds?
2. Is a member identified by a phone number, an account, or a wallet?
3. Can you charge for entry without a card processor?
4. Can a newcomer read the rules and see who is inside before joining?

## Stay on WhatsApp, with Communities and Channels

A Community plus an announcements-only group fixes the volume problem: sub-groups by topic, one place for the owner's posts, admin tools for the rest. What it cannot do is decide entry from a wallet, charge for it, or show anyone what the room holds before they are in it. Every failure above survives the upgrade.

Fit: a friends-scale or local group where everyone already knows who everyone is, and nothing is sold, gated, or promoted to strangers.

## Signal

Signal's site states that "state-of-the-art end-to-end encryption (powered by the open source Signal Protocol) keeps your conversations secure". Its username announcement of 20 February 2024 says your phone number is no longer visible by default to everyone you chat with, that there is no searchable directory of usernames, and that "you will still need a phone number to sign up for Signal". There is no paid entry and no wallet rule, so membership is a decision you make by hand, one person at a time.

Fit: a small desk or council where encryption outranks growth and nobody is being charged.

## Telegram

Telegram's FAQ states that groups hold up to 200,000 members, that "the phone number is the only way for us to identify a Telegram user", and that cloud chats are stored encrypted in the Telegram Cloud while only Secret Chats, which are one-to-one and device-specific, are end-to-end encrypted. Channels take unlimited subscribers and only admins post. Money and gating come from bots: Telegram's own documentation says bots and channels "may create subscriptions, periodically charging users a certain amount of Telegram Stars in exchange for content and services", and a holder check is a third-party bot you install and pay for.

Fit: a large public community that lives on reach and tooling, and accepts verify bots and scam DMs as the price. ## Discord with a gating bot

Discord brings roles, channels and a moderation stack, and a gating bot bolts the wallet check on top. Collab.Land, which runs on both Discord and Telegram, says it ensures "every new member holds the necessary token(s) to join" and performs "regular re-verifications". Its pricing page lists a free Starter plan capped at 25 verified members with balance checks every 24 hours, then $17.99 a month for Basic, $35 for Premium, $149 for Exclusive and $449 for Elite. Discord's own post of 17 September 2024 introducing end-to-end encrypted audio and video states that "messages on Discord will continue to follow our content moderation approach and are not end-to-end encrypted".

## Towns

Towns is an on-chain group chat app on Base: every group is minted on-chain, memberships are NFTs, and each account carries an embedded wallet. It priced memberships in USDC from 16 January 2026 and stated 450,000+ groups and 1.7 million memberships on 13 February 2026. Its home page in September 2026 reads "Discover the best money making group chats". The February 2026 iOS app is a separate account from the web app, which is where large communities stayed.

## Cherry

Your wallet is the account, so there is no number to leak and nothing to register. Entry rules are read from the chain by the app: a token balance, an NFT from a collection, a `.sol` or `.skr` name, or a balance and trading-volume threshold, up to five rules combined with all-of or any-of logic, and the app shows a visitor which ones they pass before they join. The check repeats in the background, so a wallet that sells is paywalled without anyone filing a report. Cherry hosts 200+ communities as of September 2026.

Every public group gets a storefront page on chat.cherry.fun carrying the cover image, the rules, up to six benefits, the member count, reviews from members who are actually in the room, and the entry requirements in full. ## Which one to pick

If nothing is sold and nobody claims to hold anything, stay on WhatsApp and structure it as a Community. If the room's whole premise is encryption and nothing is charged for, Signal and WhatsApp both hold that ground. If your members are already in Telegram or Discord and you want the wallet check without moving them, pay a gating bot. If you are on Base and want membership to be an NFT people can resell, look at Towns. If entry is a fact about a wallet, Cherry decides it in the app and shows the rule on a public page first.
