Farcaster review 2026: what it is and how Cherry differs

A Farcaster review for traders: the Neynar takeover, the feed and FID model, swap fees, mini apps, and how Cherry's wallet-native rooms differ.

This Farcaster review is for a trader deciding where to talk and trade in September 2026, with Cherry as the comparison. Farcaster is a public social network: a feed of casts, an embedded multichain wallet, and mini apps that open from the feed. Neynar, the company that ran its developer APIs, took over the protocol and the app in January 2026 and reset the pitch from “social + trading” to “idea to recurring revenue” for builders. Cherry (cherry.fun) is a wallet-to-wallet messenger and community app for crypto: sign in with the wallet you already use, DM any wallet address, join or create token-gated, NFT-gated, and paid group chats, with no phone number, email, or KYC. Farcaster is a feed you post to under a Farcaster ID; Cherry is rooms and DMs where the wallet is the identity.

What Farcaster is

Farcaster is a social protocol plus a flagship app, and the app was called Warpcast until May 2025, when Farcaster posted “We rebranded the app! Less confusing, easier to explain.” An account is a Farcaster ID, or FID, that Farcaster’s docs describe as registered on-chain to an Ethereum address. Each account gets an embedded wallet, and sign-up is free with email or phone. In September 2026 the farcaster.xyz home page called it “a decentralized social network where you own your identity”. Chains came in steps: Base first, Solana in May 2025, BNB Smart Chain in October 2025, Robinhood Chain in July 2026.

The history a review has to carry: Farcaster Pro, billed in USDC on Base, launched in May 2025, and Farcaster said it reached 10,000 subscribers in under six hours; from August to December 2025 the stated identity was “Social + trading is our DNA”; Clanker, a token launchpad, was acquired in October 2025, the month Farcaster announced “100K DAU in Farcaster app”. On January 21 2026 Neynar announced the acquisition: it would “maintain the Farcaster protocol, run the Farcaster clients and operate Clanker”, and “Traders can continue to trade, no changes to the wallet”. CoinDesk reported the same day that founders Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan were stepping back and that the company had raised $150 million from Paradigm and a16z in 2024. On January 23 2026 Farcaster set the new vision: “idea to recurring revenue” for builders.

What Cherry is

Cherry is a wallet-to-wallet messenger and community app built by Cherry Technologies, S.A., with a web app at chat.cherry.fun, iOS and Android apps, and a listing on the Solana dApp Store for the Seeker phone. Your wallet is the account: sign-in is a signed message (Sign In With Solana), nothing goes on-chain, no gas. Cherry started on Solana and also supports Base, Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, and Robinhood Chain for token-gated chats and wallet DMs, so a group can gate on ERC-20 or NFT holders on Base and you can DM any Ethereum address. Groups are public, private, token-gated, NFT-gated, or paid, and each public one has an indexable storefront page. Developers get mini apps, an embeddable widget, and an API with bots, free at portal.cherry.fun. Cherry hosts 200+ communities and 1M+ messages as of September 2026. The Cherry Announcements channel had 77,438 wallets on 11 September 2026. More: about Cherry .

Identity and onboarding: an FID or a wallet

A Farcaster account is a separate thing from your wallet. You sign up with email or phone, and the app registers the FID, rents storage, adds a signing key, and creates an embedded wallet; Farcaster’s docs describe doing that by hand as “many signatures and onchain transactions”. Your identity is the FID and its username, and the bags you trade sit in the wallet the app made. That design buys what a wallet-only app cannot: a $1 sign-up for an autonomous AI agent (February 2026), and an account that survives a lost device through a recovery address.

On Cherry there is no second account. Connect Phantom, Solflare, Backpack, or the Seed Vault Wallet, sign one message, and your .sol or .skr name becomes the display name. The wallet holding your tokens is the one people see, which is what makes on-chain gating work without a bot, and you can DM a wallet address that has never signed in. The trade-off mirrors Farcaster’s: no embedded wallet, no email recovery.

Feed or rooms: where the conversation happens

Farcaster is feed-first. The unit is a cast, the structure is follows, channels, replies, and reactions, and discovery runs through the home feed and the Launch feed. DMs exist, but Farcaster has not presented group chat as a product as of September 2026; the nearest thing is Calaxy, a third-party mini app with coin-gated communities.

On Cherry the unit is a room, and gating is native: a group combines up to five rules checked on-chain by Cherry, from token balance and NFT collection to domain, wallet threshold, wallet app, and payment. Members of gated public groups are re-verified in the background, so a holder who sells drops out. The mechanics are on the token-gated chat page, the money on paid communities and channels . DMs are end-to-end encrypted with keys derived from your wallet; group chats are not, by design, so moderators and bots can read what they moderate. Seeker Club, gated by a .skr domain, had 8,637 members and 58,193 messages on 11 September 2026.

Trading and fees

Farcaster built a full trading stack in the second half of 2025, and its fee announcements are the clearest public numbers: 0% swap fees on Solana and 0.15% on Base (August 2025) against wallets that “charge close to 1%”, 0% swaps and a 0.05% Ethereum wallet fee for Pro subscribers, and “No Fee November”. Around them sat trade alerts, Top Traders, PnL cards, and 5% USDC lending through Morpho (December 2025). Neynar’s January 21 2026 post kept the wallet and the Pro fee and called financial rails something builders need “regardless of trading”. Trading is no longer the headline and fees can change, so check the app before relying on one.

On Cherry, trading happens in the conversation. Type $TICKER or paste a contract address and the message renders a card with price and market cap; Buy opens a Jupiter Swap modal on web (on iOS, Swap and Buy are outbound links, per App Store rules). A trade another member shares in the chat can be copied in one tap through the same flow. Perps and tokenized stocks run in the Trading Terminal mini app (chat.cherry.fun/@trade , 160 members on 11 September 2026) and prediction markets in the Polymarket mini app (chat.cherry.fun/@predict , 978 members the same day). OTC deals settle through on-chain escrow in the Cherry mobile app, where both sides fund a program Cherry never touches.

Mini apps, mobile, and distribution

Both products run web apps inside the host app; the split is where they surface and which wallet they see. Farcaster’s docs say mini apps “enable developers to distribute native-like apps to Farcaster users”, signed in “without forms or passwords”, with an “integrated Ethereum Wallet” for payments. They were called Frames before 2025, and Neynar Studio now publishes one without code.

Cherry mini apps run inside a chat room, a WebView on mobile and an iframe on web, with the user’s Solana wallet and the room’s context from the Mini App SDK. Every mini app gets a community attached: SOL Miner has 4,012 room members, SOL Reclaim has 3,343, and BananaZone has 1,990, as of September 2026. Distribution differs too. Farcaster mini apps travel to other clients on the protocol, such as Base App and Zapper; Cherry’s SDK is live inside Solflare, Mattle.fun, SeekerGram, and Seeker Legends, and Cherry ships on the Solana dApp Store, where it is #1 with 4.8 stars from 4,000+ reviews and about 3K daily active users as of September 2026. Seeker owners verify with a soulbound .skr domain, the gate on Seeker Club . For a trader on a Seeker, that is the deciding row.

Safety and custody

Is Farcaster safe? Accounts are registered on-chain with a custody address and an optional recovery address, and the embedded wallet holds real funds, with 100,000+ funded wallets reported in October 2025. Neynar said in February 2026 that it would add an independent validator operator and open-source a snapshot of the mobile client. No public breach report has surfaced as of September 2026, and the ordinary risks apply: the tokens you buy, and the mini apps you approve.

Cherry holds nothing. Keys derive from a wallet signature and never leave your wallet, swaps route through Jupiter, escrow settles on-chain, and messages sit off-chain on Cherry’s servers, so Cherry makes no decentralisation claim for messaging. Against spam: brand-new wallets cannot post in public groups, cold DMs land in a Requests folder without a notification, and a stranger can pay a flat 0.01 SOL (the default, September 2026) to have one delivered.

Farcaster review verdict: choose Farcaster if, choose Cherry if

Choose Farcaster if:

  • You want a public feed where casts and PnL cards build a following.
  • Base is your home chain and an embedded wallet with an email or phone login suits you.
  • You are launching a token or an app and want Clanker, the Launch feed, and Neynar’s builder tools.

Choose Cherry if:

  • You want rooms and DMs rather than a feed: a holders room verified on-chain, a paid alpha group in SOL or USDC, or a DM to a wallet that never signed up anywhere.
  • Your identity is the wallet you already trade from, with Solana, Base, Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, or Robinhood Chain holders in one room.
  • You want the swap, the perps terminal, and OTC escrow inside the chat where the call was made.
  • You own a Seeker, or your community does: Seeker Club had 8,637 members on 11 September 2026.

To try the Cherry side, open chat.cherry.fun , connect your wallet, and search for a room or DM an address. If neither fits, the Farcaster alternatives roundup covers the wider field.

FAQ

What is Farcaster?

Farcaster is a social network and protocol with a public feed of posts called casts, an embedded multichain wallet, and mini apps inside the feed. The app was called Warpcast until May 2025, and Neynar took over the protocol, the clients, and the Clanker launchpad in January 2026.

What are Farcaster’s fees?

As of August 2025, Farcaster stated 0% swap fees on Solana and 0.15% on Base in the in-app wallet, with Pro subscribers getting 0% swap fees and a 0.05% wallet fee on Ethereum swaps. Neynar’s January 21 2026 post said the low Pro fee would continue. Pro is a paid subscription billed in USDC on Base.

What are Farcaster mini apps?

Farcaster mini apps are web apps that users open from the feed or a mini app store; their docs say users are signed in without forms or passwords, with an integrated Ethereum wallet for payments. They were called Frames before 2025. Cherry mini apps run the same way inside a chat room, with the user’s Solana wallet.

Is Farcaster safe?

Farcaster accounts are registered on-chain, sign-up is free with an anti-fraud system, and the embedded wallet holds your funds inside the app. The risk sits where it always does: the tokens you buy and the apps you approve. No public breach report has surfaced as of September 2026.

Is Warpcast the same as Farcaster?

Yes. Warpcast was the app’s name until May 2025, when it was renamed the Farcaster app; old warpcast.com links still resolve.

How many users does Farcaster have?

Farcaster reported 100K daily active users and 100,000+ funded wallets in October 2025. Neynar has published no comparable figure since taking over in January 2026.
