Is Farcaster dead? A dated explainer: the January 2026 Neynar acquisition, the shutdown denial, the Hypersnap fork, and what the app is used for now.

Is Farcaster dead? No. On 11 September 2026 farcaster.xyz answers with a live app, and the protocol, the clients and the Clanker launchpad are operated by Neynar, the developer-API company that bought them from Merkle on 21 January 2026. What ended is the version of Farcaster that raised $150 million to become crypto’s main social network: both founders have stepped back, protocol earnings fell 85% year over year in Q4 2025, and Coinbase’s Base App switched off its Farcaster-powered feed in February 2026. Below is the dated record, what the network is used for now, and what changed for people building on it. The Neynar acquisition, in dates

Neynar, which ran Farcaster’s developer APIs for years, took over the whole stack. Its post of 21 January 2026 states: “Neynar is acquiring Farcaster from Merkle (company working on Farcaster). This means we will now maintain the Farcaster protocol, run the Farcaster clients and operate Clanker.” The same post set the new goal, “Enable builders to go from idea to recurring revenue, supported by a builder-first network”, reassured traders that “Traders can continue to trade, no changes to the wallet”, and addressed the rumors directly: “If you have been reading rumors on your timeline about Farcaster client, protocol or Clanker shutting down, those are false.”

The Block reported the same day that no price was disclosed, that Merkle was last valued at $1 billion after a $150 million Series A in 2024 backed by a16z crypto and Paradigm, and that protocol earnings for the fourth quarter of 2025 were $1.84 million, down 85% year over year. It quoted co-founder Dan Romero on the pivot he and Varun Srinivasan were making to a wallet app: “We tried social-first for 4.5 years … It didn’t work for us.” CoinDesk’s report that day added that the two founders and parts of the Merkle team would step away from day-to-day development, that the network had roughly 80,000 daily users at the time of the 2024 raise, and quoted Romero: “This wasn’t an easy decision. But after five years, it’s clear Farcaster needs a new approach and leadership to reach its full potential.”

The Hypersnap fork and the token confusion

The fork was legal by design. Writing on 15 April 2026, Nicky Sap reported that Cassie Heart, a former Merkle engineer who had worked on Snapchain, forked that data layer into Hypersnap and hosted it on Quilibrium, an L1 with its own token, and that Neynar’s CEO Rish publicly welcomed the fork. The same piece notes Merkle had open-sourced the branding and technology under CC0 and GPL licences, which is why a fork was possible without a fight.

Hypersnap kept compatibility: as of 11 September 2026 its site says it “speaks the same wire format as Farcaster, so apps and identities built for Farcaster work here too”, and describes itself as “The evolution of Farcaster”. It also has a token, $SNAP, which is where the confusion started. Phemex News reported on 15 April 2026 that Farcaster had clarified it has no plans to issue a token and that the confusion came from the fork calling $SNAP the “Farcaster token”. By 15 June 2026 Nicky Sap put $SNAP “down more than 90% from its claim-day price with thin liquidity and minimal volume”. Two networks now carry the same identities, one with a company behind it and one without.

What Farcaster is used for today

The product is wider than the feed people remember. Casts, replies, reactions and topic channels are the social core, with DMs alongside them. Mini apps, which were called Frames, open inside the feed with sign-in and payments handled for the developer. The embedded multichain wallet does swaps, cross-chain swaps, limit orders (July 2026) and token alerts, and Clanker launches tokens on Base and Monad. Later additions aimed at builders: a Launch feed for new products (March 2026), Farcaster Spaces for live audio (May 2026), Farcaster Batches showcase days (June 2026), and a grants fund that routes 20% of Clanker protocol fees back to builders (April 2026).

The audience Farcaster pitches to has changed twice. Through 2025 it was traders: fee cuts, PnL cards, deposit bonuses, airdrops. Since the acquisition it is builders, including people running AI agents: in February 2026 Farcaster pitched autonomous account creation with “$1 and a dream”. Trading was kept but no longer led: Neynar’s post says “Traders can continue to trade, no changes to the wallet.”

Is Farcaster dead? What the numbers say

Two measurements, each with a date. First, the money: $1.84 million in protocol earnings for Q4 2025, down 85% year over year. Second, distribution: on 10 February 2026 Coinbase’s Base App removed the Farcaster-powered Talk feed and wound down Base Creator Rewards, a programme The Block reported had paid over $450,000 to about 17,000 creators in six months. Base contributor Jesse Pollak told The Block “The app needs to have one primary focus, and that thing is trading.”

Farcaster has spent 2026 arguing with the obituaries in public: “Posting from the afterlife, apparently. While the eulogists were typing, @nicky_sap shipped a live audio app on the ‘dead’ protocol.” Both things hold. The network ships, and on 15 June 2026 the writer it named as proof of life described that same network as already declared dead and still losing users and activity by the day.

What this means for builders

The assumption that broke is distribution. A mini app inside a feed inherits that feed’s reach, and the feed is the part of Farcaster that shrank. The Base App decision priced that in from the other side: Coinbase’s wallet app decided a social feed was not its job.

Two things survive and are worth copying. Portable identity is real, proved by a fork that runs the same accounts on different infrastructure. And mini apps with sign-in and payments handled by the host app remain the least painful way for a small team to ship something people can use in one tap. The open question for 2026 is where those apps should sit: a public feed, a wallet, or a chat where the users already talk to each other.

Where Cherry fits
